Why Simple, Beginner-Friendly Watercolor Projects Are So Valuable
I’m a self-taught watercolor artist, and when I began learning in 2020, I didn’t consider myself artistic at all.
What changed everything for me? Consistently painting. And what did I consistently paint? Easy tutorials. Basic warm-up drills.
Believe me, I was always searching for simple watercolor projects and brushstroke exercises that felt within reach. And when I found a keeper, I’d fold it into the projects I was already rotating — varying the paint colors, brush sizes, or paper to keep it interesting.
Every time I returned to a familiar project, I could see visible improvement in how I controlled my brush and applied paint to paper.
In my experience, progress really is that simple: just show up and put brush to paper!

🖌️ Petal-shaped strokes
🖌️ Thin-thick-thin wavy lines
🖌️ Abstract pattern pencil sketch
Why It’s Great for Beginners:
These 3 projects by artist Lou Davis are beautifully simple and easily adaptable. Each painting focuses on a different stroke technique. Choose petals if that feels easy today, or wavy lines if you want to sharpen your line-work.
